Has The Short Story Lost Its Appeal?

In the previous post, the interview with Stephen King, he proclaims that writers have lost interest in writing the short story. They may write a few stories, but quickly drift into novel writing. Is there more prestige in novel writing?

I love to read both the novel and the short story, which I realize is a major creative effort of the writer. Neither is easier to create. Each has its own demands on the writer’s ability.

For me, it is more challenging to write a short story, because I must limit the elements of a short story, complete it, and move on. I believe that the readers of today have limited time, and to entertain them, the short story is the ideal genre. What do you think?
